Scottish rugby player Emma Wassell recently underwent surgery to remove a chest tumour. The 29-year-old, who had to withdraw from her team for the WXV 2 tournament, received immense support from her teammates during her hospital stay. Emma expressed gratitude for her teammates’ care and presence, especially since her mother passed away earlier this year and could not be by her side.
Initially, Emma visited the hospital due to a sore neck that started swelling, leading to the discovery of the tumour in her chest. The tumour, later confirmed to be benign, caused concern due to its location and impact on her breathing. Despite initial challenges during surgery, Emma remains optimistic about her recovery and the future.
As a professional rugby player with 67 Scottish caps, Emma is determined to overcome this obstacle and return to the sport she loves. She was one of the first female players to receive a full-time contract from the Scottish Rugby Union and has set her sights on helping Scotland qualify for the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup.
While focusing on her recovery, Emma acknowledges the long journey ahead but embraces the challenge with enthusiasm. She credits sports for instilling a love for challenges and sees this experience as another opportunity to grow and succeed. Emma’s resilience and positive outlook serve as an inspiration to her teammates and fans as she navigates through this difficult time.
