Alex Salmond, the former first minister, is set to have a private funeral ceremony in the north-east of Scotland. The ceremony will take place the week starting October 28, as confirmed by Kenny MacAskill, the interim leader of the Alba Party. While the specific day has not been decided yet, it will be a private gathering for family and close friends.

The sudden death of Salmond from a heart attack while in North Macedonia has led to funeral arrangements that include bringing his body back to Scotland. Aberdeen Airport and various organizations have been instrumental in facilitating the process. The body was met by family and a piper at the airport before being taken to the village of Strichen, where Salmond resided with his wife, Moira.

The journey from Aberdeen to Strichen was met with an overwhelming response from the public, with people in towns and villages coming out to pay their respects. The sight of crowds along the way was heartening and provided comfort to Salmond’s family during this difficult time. The convoy was led by a group of pro-independence bikers to a funeral home in Fraserburgh.

The chartered flight that brought Salmond’s body back to Scotland was generously paid for by businessman Sir Tom Hunter. While there was a choice between a private charter and an RAF flight, it was decided that a private charter would be more suitable due to logistical reasons. The Foreign Office provided an explanation to the family regarding this decision, and it was well received by those close to Salmond.

Private charters offer more flexibility and ease in arrangements compared to RAF flights, which require additional protocols to be followed. The decision to opt for a private charter ensured a smoother process in bringing Salmond back home for his final farewell. The support and respect shown by the public throughout this journey have been a source of comfort for the family and loved ones of the late former first minister.
