GB News has been fined £100,000 by the media watchdog Ofcom for breaching impartiality rules regarding a programme where then-prime minister Rishi Sunak had a platform to promote his government’s policies. The regulator found that the programme did not challenge Sunak or present alternative views, leading to the fine and a directive for GB News to broadcast a statement on the findings.

Despite the fine, GB News is challenging the decision, with CEO Angelos Frangopoulos calling the sanctions unnecessary, unfair, and a direct attack on free speech and journalism. The channel received 547 complaints about the programme, which aired in February, prompting Ofcom to investigate and take action.

In addition to the GB News saga, journalist Isabel Oakeshott faced backlash for her controversial remarks on TalkTV, where she referred to benefit claimants as “parasites.” Oakeshott criticized the Budget announcements regarding benefit payments and welfare reforms, stating that those who receive benefits do the least and are not deserving of state support.

Her comments were condemned by disability equality charity Scope, labeling them as utterly disgraceful and belonging in the past. Oakeshott’s views sparked outrage and highlighted the ongoing debate surrounding welfare policies and support for vulnerable individuals in society. The controversy surrounding GB News and Oakeshott’s remarks underscores the importance of balanced and respectful discourse in the media.
