Aberdeen woke up to a snowy scene this morning as the first snow of the winter season fell overnight. Aberdeen City Council is urging residents to be cautious in the icy conditions. Many residents in the north-east were surprised by the snow, with some pupils experiencing disruptions to their school bus routes.

Temperatures have dropped significantly, leading the council to deploy gritter vehicles to make the roads in and around Aberdeen safer. Union Street and about 50% of the main roads have already been treated with grit, with ongoing efforts to cover the rest of the roads. Secondary routes and priority two pavements are also being treated to ensure safety for pedestrians.

In addition to the snowy conditions in Aberdeen, adverse weather has caused disruptions in Aberdeenshire as well. School buses in Inverurie and Ellon were cancelled due to the icy roads. Alternative transport arrangements had to be made for students traveling to Kellands School and Methlick Primary School. The council has provided updated information on bus schedules on their website.

The drop in temperatures across Aberdeenshire has been significant, with Elgin reaching -3C, Aberdeen at -2C, and Inverness at -5C overnight. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the northern Highlands, Moray, and the Aberdeenshire coast until 11 am today. Forecasters predict that the next few days will bring the coldest spell of the winter season so far, with more wintry weather expected.
