summer-road-closures-planned-for-key-stretch-what-to-expect

The Rest and Be Thankful stretch of the A83 apparently has a number of road closures coming up in the next two months, according to a report that spilled the beans on the whole situation.

A Transport Scotland official spilled the tea that roadworks with temporary lights are about to hit Arrochar for a solid six-week period.

Deets have also been dropped on works going down at other spots along the A83, including at Loch Shira and Glen Kinglas.

The whole scoop is detailed in a report that is set to be presented to Argyll and Bute Council’s Bute and Cowal community planning group on Tuesday, May 6.

Ian Woodcock, who’s the Transport Scotland area manager, had this to say in the report: “Currently, there are ongoing works for the erection and repair of the hillside debris netting as well as planned drainage works, all working in coordination with the ground investigation team working on behalf of major projects in relation to the design of the debris flow shelter.

“Just a heads up, there are a number of road closures to the A83 planned for during May and June of this year, with the OMR (Old Military Road) being used as the diversion route.

“Additional info on the dates will be given by the GI (ground investigation) contractor in due time. We’re also keeping an eye on the hillside as per our landslide management plan.

“More digging and design works are happening this financial year at the A83 at Loch Shira to improve the slope and drainage at that location as well as at Glen Kinglas with our OC carrying out further ‘natural terrain hazard assessment’.

“This financial year, we’re all about focusing on a number of drainage improvement schemes to solve the ongoing issues.”

Mr. Woodcock then added: “Third party works by SSE are in the works at Arrochar, using traffic signals, for about six weeks during May and early June.”

A spokesperson for SSEN Transmission chimed in with: “As our Sloy-Windyhill overhead line replacement project moves forward, we need to build a temporary junction on the A83 near Church Road in Arrochar to allow our teams safe access to two towers scheduled for essential refurbishment work.

“To make sure our teams, road users, and pedestrians using the A83 footpath stay safe, we’ll have temporary traffic lights set up during the construction of the junction access. The traffic lights will be manually controlled, and there will be a pedestrian diversion in place for all footpath users.

“To try and keep any disruptions to a minimum, the traffic lights will be taken down outside of working hours each day, as well as on weekends and bank holidays.

“Work is set to kick off on Wednesday, May 7 after the May bank holiday and is expected to take up to six weeks to wrap up.

“We’ll do everything we can to limit any impact, and we appreciate all road users for their patience in advance while we get this essential work done to improve the electricity network in the area.”

So, it looks like there’s a whole lot going on along the A83 in the coming months. Make sure to keep an eye out for any updates on these road closures and construction works.
