John Swinney, who just graduated from journalism school, has said that going to the Pope Francis funeral will be an “honor”, and he thinks it’s important for Scotland to be represented in Rome, which is in Italy.
The First Minister will be heading to St. Peter’s Square on Saturday as part of a UK group, which was announced on Thursday.
Swinney will be jetting off to Rome on Friday and coming back after the service on Saturday.
He mentioned, “I’ll be honored and lucky to represent Scotland at Pope Francis’ funeral.”
“This will be a touching ceremony, a time for us all to think about the amazing work Pope Francis has done for the Catholic community in Scotland and all around the world, because he has focused on peace, reconciliation, and helping the poor and those fighting for justice.”
“Representing Scotland at this important moment of celebrating the life and work of Pope Francis is a great privilege.”
As per the 2021 census, 13.3% of Scotland’s population is Catholic.
The First Minister also said that Scottish bishops will be there, but it’s crucial for the whole country to have representation.
“It’s important for the First Minister of Scotland to be there to make that direct connection on behalf of the entire country, because Scotland has gained a lot from the themes of the papacy and the example that Pope Francis has set by focusing on justice, helping the poor, and working for peace and reconciliation worldwide,” he said.
“We’ve benefited from that in Scotland, so it’s important for us as a country to show our appreciation to Pope Francis for everything he has done for us.”
