Physiotherapy assistant Emily Robbie is on a mission to revitalize an empty shop unit in Aberdeen city center by transforming it into a pilates studio. Having taught pilates classes in the Granite City for nearly two years, she now has plans in place to create her own space on Chapel Street.

The 27-year-old instructor, who started teaching classes at various locations last year, has seen a growing demand for her classes. She believes that the proposed pilates studio will not only provide a healthy environment for fitness enthusiasts but also contribute to reducing stress, promoting physical activity, and enhancing mental wellbeing.

Emily envisions her studio adding vibrancy to the area and complementing the presence of independent businesses in the neighborhood. To address potential noise concerns, she plans to play low-level relaxing music during classes. The studio’s location, next to the popular Almondine patisserie, could also bring a much-needed boost to nearby shops and cafes.

The Chapel Street unit, which previously housed a charity shop, has been vacant for years. While past attempts to repurpose the space as a cafe did not materialize, Emily sees this opportunity as a way to contribute to the rejuvenation of Union Street and its surroundings. She hopes that her clients will support local businesses by patronizing cafes and restaurants in the area.

Recent reports indicate that Aberdeen’s city center streets are characterized by a high percentage of independent businesses. Chapel Street, where Emily plans to open her studio, boasts an 80% independent business rate, while Thistle Street leads with over 90% independent establishments.

By establishing her pilates studio in the heart of Aberdeen, Emily Robbie aims to not only fulfill her dream of having her own space but also to promote physical and mental wellbeing in the community. With plans in place and a vision to support local businesses, her endeavor could be a significant step towards revitalizing the city center and fostering a sense of community among residents and visitors alike.
