The police identified the victim as Johnny Baxter, a 22-year-old from the Kilbirnie area. The crash took place on the A769 Largs to Kilbirnie Road, involving a silver Honda Civic and a white Mercedes B class at around 5.10 pm on Tuesday.

Emergency services responded to the scene, but unfortunately, Baxter, the driver of the Honda Civic, was pronounced dead. His passenger, also 22 years old, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. The driver of the Mercedes, a 63-year-old individual, was taken to University Hospital Crosshouse in Kilmarnock for evaluation.
