The unveiling of Denis Law’s new Printfield memorial is set to happen on the same day as Aberdeen’s cup final, and some folks are feeling a bit let down by this unfortunate turn of events. The memorial, which will honor ‘The Lawman’s’ childhood in Printfield, is scheduled to be officially opened tomorrow at 3:15 pm on Saturday, May 24. However, this timing coincides with Aberdeen’s big match in the Scottish Cup Final, starting at Hampden Park in Glasgow.
The event is expected to be attended by as many members of the Law family as possible, traveling all the way from Manchester for the occasion. Denis Law, a beloved footballer in Aberdeen, spent his formative years in Printfield and was a student at Powis Academy. With 404 appearances for Manchester United under his belt, he remains Scotland’s sole Ballon D’Or recipient to this day. Sadly, Law passed away at the age of 84 after a tough battle with illness last January.
Mark Williams, CEO of the Denis Law Legacy Trust, expressed his regret about the clash in schedules, admitting that he would have preferred a different date. Despite the disappointment felt by some due to the calendar conflict, Mark emphasized that it was the only date that worked for everyone involved. Printfield councillor Neil Copland echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging the disappointment caused by the timing but highlighting the importance of accommodating the Law family’s presence for the event.
The memorial unveiling will take place at number 10 on the corner of Printfield Walk and Printfield Terrace, a project initiated by the local community in collaboration with various partners. Activities and workshops will be available for families in the Printfield play area between 2 pm and 4:15 pm, including games by The Denis Law Legacy Trust and workshops by Fine Day Studio and the Robert Gordon University Mobile Art School. Despite the clash with the cup final, the community is encouraged to visit Printfield and enjoy the trail and murals in the weeks following the event.
So, it seems like the clash with Aberdeen’s cup final has left some feeling a bit disappointed about the unveiling of Denis Law’s memorial in Printfield. But hey, at least it’s a day that works for everyone involved, right? Maybe it’s just me, but it would have been nice to avoid this calendar clash. Nonetheless, the event promises to be a fantastic day for Aberdeen, celebrating both the legacy of Denis Law and the football club’s journey to the Scottish Cup final after quite some time.
