In Aviemore, a new community cinema project is underway to bring the magic of the big screen to local cinema enthusiasts. Filmmaker Hannah Bailey and her husband Rupert Shanks have joined forces to launch the Cairngorm Community Cinema (CCC), with the aim of uniting the community through film.
Supported by Film Hub Scotland, the project has received funding to host monthly screenings at Spey Valley Cinema. The opening night featured the film “The Outrun” and drew in a record turnout of over 140 attendees. Hannah Bailey shared that the idea for the community cinema came about during a networking event where she connected with Grazina Scuckaite of Film Hub Scotland.
The team behind CCC is dedicated to bringing thought-provoking films to Aviemore, with a focus on movies that have a connection to the local community. Hannah emphasized the importance of shared experiences in a cinema setting, highlighting the social aspect of watching films together with others. Despite the rise of streaming services, she believes that the unique atmosphere of a cinema can never be replaced.
With plans for Q&A sessions and special guest appearances, the Cairngorm Community Cinema aims to offer more than just film screenings. The next screening, “The Kneecap,” is set for December 10, promising another engaging cinematic experience for the community.
As more creative individuals flock to the Cairngorms, the demand for cultural events and activities continues to grow. By providing a platform for independent films and fostering a sense of community through cinema, the CCC hopes to preserve the magic of the cinema experience for years to come.
