Iona Fyfe, a folk singer from Huntly, has been elected as the new rector of Aberdeen University. The rector position, dating back to the university’s establishment in 1495, symbolizes the student body at important meetings. Iona received 295 votes, surpassing Dr. Camilo Torres Barragán, who had 261 votes.
Graduating from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Iona faced challenges due to chronic illness and hypermobility syndrome during her studies. Despite these obstacles, she became an advocate for various charitable organizations, including the Musicians Union. Additionally, she co-founded Oor Vyce, a campaign advocating for the legal recognition of the Scots Language, including the Doric dialect of Scots. This initiative is overseeing the Scottish Languages Bill, which aims to update the Gaelic Language Act and introduce a new Scots Language Act.
Starting her three-year term as rector in the new year, Iona expressed her gratitude for being chosen to represent the students of Aberdeen University. She highlighted the importance of addressing student concerns such as housing reform, mental health support, access to sports and arts activities, and student safety. Iona aims to make a significant impact in these areas and others outlined in her manifesto.
Student President Christina Schmid praised both Iona and Dr. Camilo as exceptional leaders with a strong commitment to addressing student issues. She emphasized the importance of having a Rector who will advocate for students and collaborate with the Students’ Union to represent student interests effectively.
Iona Fyfe is scheduled to assume her new role on January 1, 2025, eager to work towards positive changes for the student community at Aberdeen University.
