Proposals have been put forward to Glasgow City Council to upgrade the Pavilion Theatre on 121 Renfield Street, with a focus on enhancing the basement and bar area. The goal is to create a more functional space and improve the accommodation for bar staff.

One of the main changes planned is to widen an existing opening within the bar area. The current bar will be replaced with a new bar fitting that will provide more trading and working space. Additionally, new panelling and drinks shelves will be added to enhance the area.

The application submitted to the city council assures that the proposed upgrades will not impact the Glasgow Central Conservation Area, as all the work will be internal. It also ensures that the character and integrity of the listed building will be preserved, with the exception of the terrazzo which is beyond repair.

The Pavilion Theatre, designed by Bertie Crewe for Glasgow Pavilion Ltd, opened its doors on February 29, 1904. Over the years, it has continued to host a variety of events and entertainment. The proposed upgrades aim to modernize certain aspects of the theatre while respecting its historical significance.

A historic planning statement submitted to the local authority explains that the proposed works are lightweight, reversible, and have minimal impact on the special interest of the listed theatre building. Any intervention within the historic structure will be limited to areas of little architectural or historic significance.

In addition to the current proposals, the theatre had previously sought permission to upgrade its heating system. These efforts to enhance the Pavilion Theatre demonstrate a commitment to maintaining its status as a popular entertainment venue in the heart of Glasgow.
