Former first minister Humza Yousaf recently made a statement on the International Day of Solidarity with Palestinians. This day is significant as it is an annual reminder of the ongoing struggle for human rights, peace, and justice that Palestinians have been facing for 76 years. The United Nations established this day in 1977, and this year’s commemoration holds even more weight due to the continued bombardment of Gaza that has lasted over a year.
The conflict in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of over 44,000 Palestinians in the past 400 days, with roughly 70% of them being women and children according to UN estimates. Additionally, more than 104,000 individuals have been injured, and thousands are still missing. Humza Yousaf expressed his thoughts on this situation in a video shared on social media, questioning the true impact of solidarity on the lives of Palestinians who are suffering.
Yousaf emphasized the need for actions over mere words when it comes to showing support for the Palestinian people. He called on the UK Government to take a stand by committing to arresting Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu if he enters British territory. The International Criminal Court recently issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his former defense minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the conflict in Gaza.
Furthermore, Yousaf urged the UK to halt arms sales to Israel and push for an immediate ceasefire in the region. He stressed the importance of continuing to speak out about the situation in Gaza and reassured the Palestinian people that they are not alone in their struggle.
Solidarity should not be limited to symbolic gestures but should translate into concrete actions that hold accountable those responsible for perpetuating violence and injustice. Yousaf’s call for justice and peace resonates with the need for global solidarity to bring an end to the suffering of the Palestinian people. It is crucial for individuals and governments alike to stand up against oppression and work towards a future where all people can live in peace and security.
