scottish-voters-prefer-majoritarian-government-survey-nsights

So, like, this survey done by the Diffley Partnership for Electoral Reform Society (ERS) Scotland found some pretty interesting stuff, you know? They asked over 1000 Scots adults about their opinions on how Parliament should work and who they trust in the government and stuff. And guess what? Turns out, Reform and Tory voters are all about that “majoritarian” government life, while other party supporters are not so keen on that idea.

The survey asked people to choose between different statements, like whether Parliament should consider all opinions before making laws or if they should just get things done quickly, even if it means ignoring some opinions. And it turns out that 73% of Scots think all opinions should be considered, while 27% are all about that fast and efficient law-making.

Oh, and get this, 72% of people prefer a leader who seeks consensus before making decisions, while 28% are all for a strong leader who doesn’t compromise. Sounds like a tough crowd to please, right? But hey, that’s democracy for you.

The survey also found that Tory and Reform voters, men, and older folks are more likely to support the “majoritarian” views. Like, 35% of Tory voters and 27% of Reform voters are down with at least three out of four majoritarian options. Meanwhile, only 15% of SNP and Labour voters, 14% of LibDem voters, and a measly 5% of Green voters are on board with that.

Oh, and when it comes to trust, Scots seem to trust their local supermarket more than the police, courts, councils, or national parliaments. I mean, who can blame them? Supermarkets have all the good snacks and stuff. The survey asked people to rate how much they trust different public bodies and institutions on a scale of 1-10. The NHS got the highest rating at 6.5, followed by supermarkets at 5.5. The police, banks, courts, and local council all scored lower than supermarkets. Ouch.

And get this, national parliaments and politicians were at the bottom of the trust pile. Like, people trust the Scottish Parliament more than the UK Parliament, which is not really surprising. Political parties and politicians didn’t score too high on the trust scale either. I mean, can you blame them? Politicians and trust don’t really go hand in hand, right?

So, yeah, that’s the gist of it. Scots are all about collaboration and careful decision-making when it comes to Parliament, and they trust supermarkets more than politicians. Not really sure why this matters, but hey, that’s the news for you. Just goes to show you can’t trust anyone these days, not even your local MP.
