Bobby Gillespie, the lead singer of Primal Scream, recently spoke out against Blur bassist Alex James for socializing with former Tory Prime Minister David Cameron and Jeremy Clarkson back in 2011. In an interview with The i, Gillespie criticized the practice of using the music industry as a way to climb the social ladder.

He pointed out that being in a successful band comes with invitations to various events and connections with people from different social classes. However, he made it clear that he doesn’t agree with the idea of trying to emulate the lifestyle of someone like Alex James, who was seen socializing with Cameron and Clarkson.

Despite James distancing himself from Cameron and Clarkson in a later interview with the Sunday Times, Cameron still attended James’ New Year’s Eve party in 2015. Gillespie called out this behavior as a form of social climbing, emphasizing the importance of being aware of the company you keep.

When asked if he feels any guilt about Primal Scream’s success, Gillespie explained that there is no guilt involved. He and his bandmates pursued a career in music to avoid working in a factory or being told what to do. Gillespie recalled his father’s advice to seize opportunities while they are available, as tomorrow is never guaranteed.

It’s essential to remember that the music industry, like many other fields, can sometimes blur the lines between personal and professional relationships. While networking and socializing are common practices, it’s crucial to stay true to your values and be mindful of the company you keep. Bobby Gillespie’s comments serve as a reminder to prioritize authenticity and integrity in all aspects of life, regardless of one’s level of success.
