An independent Scottish distillery has partnered with a leading biotech company to repurpose whisky by-products for cultivating Omega-3-rich microalgae in a sustainable manner.

MiAlgae, a Scottish biotech company, will utilize whisky by-products, such as effluent from Eden Mill’s distillation process, to nurture microalgae rich in Omega-3s. This innovative partnership aims to address the global demand for Omega-3s, traditionally sourced from wild-caught fish, which has led to unsustainable overfishing practices.

Eden Mill has taken steps towards sustainability by installing an effluent storage tank at its distillery site near St Andrews. The distillery plans to resume distillation in early 2025 and open its doors to visitors in the spring, offering both gin and single malt Scotch whisky.

By growing microalgae as a source of Omega-3s through an innovative process, MiAlgae hopes to eliminate the need for fish, ensuring a stable and sustainable supply of essential nutrients. The circular solution of using algae, the original source of Omega-3s, demonstrates a commitment to environmental responsibility and resource efficiency.

Rennie Donaldson, CEO of Eden Mill, expressed excitement about the partnership with MiAlgae and the opportunity to create sustainable Omega-3 from distillery waste. The focus on sustainability aligns with the distillery’s long-term plans and overall business strategy.

Douglas Martin, founder of MiAlgae, highlighted the collaborative effort to utilize nutrients from distillery by-products for growing eco-friendly microalgae. The partnership reflects a shared dedication to advancing biotechnology for positive environmental impact.

MiAlgae’s recognition as a finalist for the Earthshot Prize, alongside securing funding to expand operations, demonstrates the company’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges and meeting growing global demand for sustainable Omega-3 sources.

In addition to producing Omega-3-rich microalgae, the new Eden Mill distillery will feature retail space, a cafe, and a bar overlooking the Eden Estuary. Details about the visitor center and ticket bookings will be available soon, providing an opportunity for the public to engage with the distillery’s sustainability initiatives.
