Peterhead Fishing Port Achieves Record-Breaking Fish Landings Ahead of Schedule

In a historic moment for the fishing industry, the Peterhead Port Authority (PPA) has shattered its previous record for annual fish landings. This remarkable feat was achieved with a month to spare, underscoring the port’s dominance in the European fisheries market.

Breaking Down the Numbers

By the end of November, more than £257 million worth of catches had been traded across the quaysides of Peterhead Port. This figure far exceeded the total value of £232 million for the entire year of 2023. The total haul for this year weighed in at a staggering 219,000 tonnes, valued at £257.3 million.

White-fish landings accounted for 54,502 tonnes, valued at £100.2 million during the latest period. This marked a significant increase from the previous year’s figures of 52,765 tonnes worth £96.8 million. Pelagic species, including herring and mackerel, reached 159,229 tonnes, valued at £143.3 million in the same period. In comparison, 131,534 tonnes worth £113.1 million were landed between January and November 2023.

Shellfish landings also saw a notable uptick, totaling 5,538 tonnes valued at £13.9 million, compared to 5,506 tonnes worth £16.1 million previously.

Expert Insights and Future Investments

Peter Duncan, the head of fishing commercial at PPA, expressed immense pride in the port’s achievements, emphasizing the significant boost in pelagic figures due to new economic link regulations. He also highlighted the continuous efforts to enhance the port’s infrastructure and commitment to quality in the seafood supply chain.

Over the years, PPA has invested over £50 million in modernizing the fish market and quayside facilities, enabling vessels to land fish under all tide conditions. The recent completion of a new ice factory adjacent to the fish market further underscores the port’s unwavering support for the fishing industry.

Looking ahead, PPA has approved the introduction of an electronic auction system within the fish market, set to launch in early spring 2026. This new initiative aims to streamline the buying and selling process, enhancing efficiency and transparency in the seafood market.

With its record-breaking achievements and ongoing investments, Peterhead Port continues to solidify its position as a powerhouse in the European fishing industry, setting new standards for excellence and innovation.
