The Royal Navy has recently launched its newest and most advanced hunter-killer submarine, the HMS Agamemnon, which will be stationed in Faslane. This submarine is the sixth out of seven Astute-class submarines and has been affectionately nicknamed “Awesome Aggie” by its commanding officer.
The vessel was first put into the water at BAE Systems’ facility in Barrow before undergoing final tests and heading to the Clyde naval base in Faslane. Named after the Greek king known for besieging Troy, the HMS Agamemnon will play a crucial role in protecting the UK’s nuclear deterrent and aircraft carrier task groups, as well as conducting Royal Marine raids and gathering intelligence.
Equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles, the submarine is capable of engaging threats on land, making it a valuable asset in national defense. The managing director of BAE Systems Submarines, Steven Timms, emphasized the complexity and importance of building a nuclear-powered submarine, acknowledging the effort of thousands of skilled individuals involved in the project.
Commander David Crosby, the commanding officer of Agamemnon, expressed his excitement at seeing the submarine in the water and highlighted the significance of this milestone in the final stages of its construction and commissioning. With submarines playing a crucial role in the UK’s defense capabilities, efforts are underway to ensure that Agamemnon is fully operational and ready to join the Royal Navy’s fleet as soon as possible.
