I NEVER knew that “delivering for Scotland” meant delivering another costly by-election. Until this week, that is – which has been an absolute stinker for Anas Sarwar and Scottish Labour.
Disqualification and Legal Issues:
First, on Sunday, Glasgow City Council’s newest Labour councillor, Mary McNab, was disqualified for failing to quit her job with the local authority, automatically disqualifying her from office. This led to the possibility of another costly by-election, putting financial strain on residents in the Glasgow North East ward.
On Monday, Glasgow Labour councillor Philip Braat faced charges related to stalking offenses, adding to the legal troubles within Scottish Labour. This came shortly after another councillor, Inverclyde Council leader Stephen McCabe, was charged with assault and threatening behavior.
Press Pack and Feud:
On Tuesday, Sarwar faced a hungry press pack and attempted to address the issues. However, his denial of a wider cultural issue within the party and refusal to apologize for the council by-election legal blunder sparked a feud with Glasgow City Council leader Susan Aitken.
Political Maneuvers and Setbacks:
Sarwar’s attempt to introduce amendments to the Social Security (Amendment) (Scotland) Bill at Holyrood faced competition from the SNP’s Pension Age Winter Heating Payment scheme, leading to a failed vote. The following day, Shona Robison’s Scottish Budget statement revealed the SNP’s plan to abolish the two-child benefit cap, causing further challenges and criticisms from Sarwar.
Implications for the Future:
The events of this week not only present immediate challenges for Sarwar and Scottish Labour but also have significant implications for future political decisions and party dynamics. This turbulent week may have a lasting impact on the party’s trajectory and relationships within the political landscape.
