Aberdeen Student Show is gearing up for its highly anticipated return in 2023 with a new production that promises to be a hilarious and entertaining parody of a well-known film and musical. The upcoming show, titled ‘Seagully Blonde’, will take place at Aberdeen’s His Majesty’s Theatre in April next year, marking the 104th year of this beloved Aberdonian tradition. The announcement of the show title was made by student administrators on Original 106FM, generating excitement among Aberdeen residents and theatre enthusiasts alike.
Excitement for the upcoming production is palpable, with the show’s Administrator, Sam Allan, expressing his enthusiasm for the year ahead. As a 4th year English and Film student at the University of Aberdeen, Allan is proud of the hard work that the team has put into shaping next year’s Student Show. He emphasized the goal of raising funds for local charities while providing top-notch entertainment for the audience. Allan highlighted the dedicated efforts of the team in preparing for the show and expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of the people of Aberdeen.
Director Gavin Mckay shed light on the creative process behind selecting ‘Seagully Blonde’ as the next production. With a focus on strong female characters and a desire to offer a fresh experience for the audience, the team decided to shift from the previous year’s theme to a vibrant and lively portrayal of Aberdeen University. Mckay emphasized the universal appeal of the chosen movie/musical and the excitement of bringing it to life with a Doric twist. He teased that the production will be “sassy, silly, and sparkly”, promising a memorable theatrical experience for all.
The plot of ‘Seagully Blonde’ follows the journey of Kinkell Woods, affectionately known as Elle, as she navigates her way from rural surroundings to the bustling Granite City to pursue a law degree. While Elle insists she’s not following her ex-boyfriend to Aberdeen, the possibility of rekindling their romance lingers. However, as Elle immerses herself in city life, she begins to discover new dimensions of herself and questions the importance of having a man by her side.
The Student Society behind the production is grateful for the support of local businesses like Apache North Sea and CALA Homes, among others, in covering production costs. By securing sponsorships, the society ensures that 100% of ticket sales can directly benefit deserving charities in the North East of Scotland. The Student Show has a long-standing tradition of giving back to the community by supporting various charities through grants, event participation, and ongoing assistance.
For many involved in the Student Show, the experience holds a special place in their hearts. Gavin Mckay shared a personal anecdote about how the show played a significant role in his decision to remain in Aberdeen after university, citing the friendships formed and the positive impact on his life. The sense of camaraderie and purpose within the Student Show community extends beyond the stage, fostering lasting connections and meaningful contributions to the local community.
Tickets for ‘Seagully Blonde’ are set to go on sale at Aberdeen Box Office on September 27, offering audiences the chance to secure their seats for the production running from April 23-26, 2025.
