SNP Ministers Urged to Avoid Meeting Donald Trump

Scottish ministers have been urged not to meet with US President-elect Donald Trump if he visits Aberdeenshire this year. Mr Trump’s son, Eric, revealed to journalists in November that his father plans to visit Scotland in 2025 for the opening of a new golf course at his club in Menie. The Scottish Greens have strongly advised the government to steer clear of any engagement with the controversial figure.

Political Stand Against Trump’s Visit

In light of the impending visit, Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie emphasized the importance of standing against the divisive and hateful politics represented by Donald Trump. Harvie stressed the significance of upholding human rights, equality, and other values that Trump has actively opposed. He specifically called on the First Minister and his colleagues to decline any meeting requests during Trump’s potential visit, emphasizing the need to prioritize relationships with countries that share civilized values and respect democratic norms.

Scottish Government’s Response

Responding to the concerns raised by the Scottish Greens, a spokesman for the Scottish Government highlighted the importance of promoting and protecting Scotland’s interests while acknowledging the significance of the relationship with the United States. The government recognizes the USA as one of Scotland’s key markets and sources of investment, aiming to maintain strong social, cultural, and economic ties with the country. Scottish ministers are committed to ensuring that these ties continue to strengthen while upholding the core values of both Scotland and the United States.

Trump International Scotland’s Perspective

Sarah Malone, executive president of Trump International Scotland, defended the president-elect against Patrick Harvie’s criticisms, labeling his behavior as immature and detrimental to Scotland. Malone highlighted the substantial economic investment made by the Trump family in Scotland and criticized Harvie for attacking the incoming US president with derogatory language. Despite the controversy surrounding Trump, Malone emphasized the positive impact of his investments on the Scottish economy and expressed dismay at the disparaging remarks made against him.
