An RAF pilot shared the harrowing experience of his plane’s engine failing right after take-off, causing him to crash at an Elgin airfield. Iain Bright, a flight lieutenant from RAF Lossiemouth, recounted how he had just five seconds to react as he descended from a 100ft drop over the Easterton airfield.

Mr. Bright was flying a small aircraft when the engine suddenly stopped working, giving him no warning. He described the moment of impact as terrifying, with the looming threat of a grassy mound that could have been fatal if hit. By attempting a left turn to reduce the crash angle, he narrowly avoided the mound but still suffered severe injuries upon impact.

After being knocked unconscious in the crash, Mr. Bright regained consciousness and called for help. His injuries were extensive, with two broken ankles, a broken back in two places, four broken ribs, a partially collapsed lung, and internal bleeding. The immediate response from emergency services, including Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA), played a crucial role in his rescue.

SCAA’s Helimed 79 quickly arrived on the scene, providing pain relief and necessary medical attention before airlifting Mr. Bright to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. The prompt response and professional care he received from the emergency crew were instrumental in saving his life and minimizing the impact of his injuries.

Following the accident in July 2021, Mr. Bright has been on a three-year journey to recovery, undergoing multiple surgeries and extensive rehabilitation. Despite the physical and emotional challenges he faced, he remained determined to give back to SCAA, raising funds for the organization that played a vital role in his rescue.

His daughter also contributed to fundraising efforts, participating in charity challenges to support SCAA’s lifesaving work. Mr. Bright expressed his gratitude to the emergency services that saved his life, emphasizing the importance of having swift and efficient medical assistance, especially in remote areas where immediate help can make a significant difference.

Reflecting on his experience, Mr. Bright highlighted the reassurance of knowing that services like SCAA are available to provide rapid transport and critical care when emergencies occur. He acknowledged the dedication and professionalism of the rescue crew, underscoring the profound impact their timely intervention had on his survival and recovery.
