Labour MP Mike Amesbury has stated that he will fully cooperate with any investigations conducted by the police in relation to an incident that took place on Saturday. The incident in question involved an alleged assault, with footage circulating online showing the backbencher appearing to confront a man who was lying on the road before being pushed away by a bystander.
Cheshire Police have confirmed that they are looking into the reports of the attack that occurred in Frodsham at 2:48 am, and investigations are currently ongoing.
In the video shared on social media, Amesbury can be seen pointing his finger at the man on the ground and saying, “You won’t ever threaten me again, will you?” while someone off-camera shouts at him. Another man in the video responds by calling the MP names.
Amesbury, 55, has expressed that he felt threatened while he was out with friends and has assured that he will cooperate with the authorities if needed. He emphasized his commitment to serving the people of Runcorn and Helsby while remaining an open and accessible MP for the community.
This incident comes after a previous stalking incident involving the MP at his constituency office in Frodsham last year, where a man was convicted of stalking him.
A spokesperson for the Labour party has acknowledged the incident and stated that they are aware of the situation. They mentioned that Amesbury himself approached the police to report the incident and will assist with any inquiries they may have.
Amesbury had shared on social media about attending a meeting with local residents to discuss policing and community safety just prior to the incident. The police have urged anyone with information about the assault in Frodsham to come forward as inquiries continue.
As investigations unfold, the community awaits further updates on the situation involving the Labour MP and the alleged altercation that took place.
