Alex Salmond’s family and friends are considering a significant celebration of his life on St. Andrew’s Day in Edinburgh. While a private funeral is being planned, there is a possibility of a larger, more public memorial around St. Andrew’s Day or another winter holiday in Scotland.
Members of the Scottish Resistance have invited the public to join them for a vigil in Glasgow on November 30th in honor of Salmond. Alba’s general secretary, Chris McEleny, mentioned that St. Andrew’s Day, Hogmanay (New Year’s Eve), and even Burns Night are being considered for the celebration, as Salmond was passionate about Scotland’s winter festivals.
St. Andrew’s Day falls on November 30th, approximately a month after the expected private funeral. Acting Alba leader Kenny MacAskill expressed gratitude for the public reception during a cortege led by the Yes Bikers upon Salmond’s return to Scotland.
Salmond was in North Macedonia to attend a Cultural Diplomacy Forum in the city of Ohrid before his passing. The Scottish Parliament released a statement after tributes left for him outside Holyrood were removed due to forecasted strong winds from Storm Ashley.
It is heartwarming to see the outpouring of support and respect for Alex Salmond from the people of Scotland. The consideration of various winter holidays for a memorial celebration reflects the deep connection Salmond had to his country’s traditions and festivities. His legacy will undoubtedly be honored in a fitting and meaningful way by those who knew and admired him.
